I noticed that yesterday was both National Cheese Toast Day and National Double Cheeseburger Day, which got me thinking about website menus and their weird names and shapes.
Hamburger
Grilled Cheese
Kebab
Meatball
Chocolate Bar or Bento Box
Candy Box
So many things in tech are named after foods!
There’s the Raspberry Pi computer.
Apple, obviously.
Java and javascript.
Cookies.
Breadcrumbs.
SPAM.
And, of course, my own company Lime Creative.
There’s something so whimsical, cheerful, and hilarious about these snappy, snacky names for—let’s be honest—some pretty boring stuff.
You can be having an extremely dry conversation about website navigation strategies and then devolve into a half-serious argument over whether the menu icon should be a meatball or a hamburger. How ridiculous! (And awesome.)
My default is the hamburger menu icon, and I’m not ashamed to admit that there’s part of me that really wants to use an actual hamburger icon instead of the three bar “hamburger” sometimes.

Which brings me back to my premise.
Nerds should be in charge of naming everything. Not only would everything have a crazy and delicious name, we’d get to have so many more totally bizarre conversations debating the merits of things like raspberry pie versus apple. (Not that you can really compare those two things in either the food world or the tech world).
This blog post is making me hungry.
Happy Monday!
It’s also National Guacamole Day.
